Italian police say a 20-year-old woman was allegedly raped on the night of Oct. 25 in Tor Tre Teste, a peripheral district of Rome, while her 24-year-old boyfriend was forced to watch. Authorities arrested three men in connection with the attack and are continuing to investigate whether additional suspects were present.

Police report that the couple were in a parked car at around 3 a.m. when at least three men approached them, shattered a window and pulled them from the vehicle. Investigators say the pair were partially undressed, that two suspects restrained the 24-year-old man, and that a third allegedly sexually assaulted the woman. The group is also accused of robbing and assaulting the couple.

Two suspects were detained in Rome and a third was arrested in Verona. All three are being held in prison on charges of group sexual violence and robbery; authorities have seized the suspects' mobile phones as part of the investigation.

Political leaders condemned the attack and urged stronger measures to improve safety in Rome’s neglected outskirts. Luisa Regimenti of the centre-right Forza Italia party said many parks on the city's periphery are in “a serious state of abandonment” and called for decisive action so residents can safely use public green spaces day and night.

Deputy Prime Minister Matteo Salvini noted that the report came on the UN’s International Day for the Elimination of Violence Against Women and described the news as “awful.” Writing on X, he reiterated his party’s longstanding proposal to introduce chemical castration for convicted rapists and pedophiles, calling for broader public and parliamentary backing for tougher penalties.

The incident is the second reported sexual assault in recent months in Tor Tre Teste, a neighbourhood characterised by council housing, high unemployment and elevated crime levels. In August, a 60-year-old woman walking her dog was allegedly attacked and raped in the area; police later arrested a 26-year-old man who said he had been under the influence of crack cocaine. Prosecutors allege he may have assaulted another woman in the same neighbourhood days earlier. Records indicate that man arrived in Italy in 2016 and was granted humanitarian protection in 2023.

Police and local officials continue their inquiries into the October attack while community leaders press for increased policing, better lighting and maintenance of public spaces in outlying Roman districts.
