A teenager was killed and at least eight other young people were wounded in two separate shootings in downtown Chicago on Friday night, authorities said.

Incident details

The first shooting occurred about 9:50 p.m. near the Chicago Theatre, where seven adolescents, ages 13 to 17, suffered gunshot wounds. All seven were transported to area hospitals and were reported to have survived their injuries.

Less than an hour later, a second shooting took place in the same neighborhood. Both victims in that incident were 18 years old; one was later pronounced dead at a nearby hospital and the other was wounded.

Investigation and response

Chicago police said no arrests have been made in connection with either shooting. Investigators are canvassing the area and reviewing available surveillance footage and witness accounts as they pursue leads.

The incidents have also reignited a national debate over public safety in Chicago. In recent weeks, President Donald Trump has proposed deploying the National Guard to the city to help address crime and immigration concerns. Local Democratic leaders have pushed back, arguing the move overstates the city's crime problems for political purposes.
