Dashcam Captures Suspected Drunk Driver Plowing Into Cars on Iowa Highway 69 — No Major Injuries

Dashcam footage released by the Story County Sheriff’s Office shows a suspected intoxicated driver striking two vehicles head-on on Highway 69 south of Story City, Iowa, after failing to stop for a deputy on Nov. 8. Three vehicles were left badly damaged, but authorities reported no serious injuries at the scene.

The sheriff’s office said a deputy on patrol observed a vehicle driving erratically before it crossed into oncoming traffic. The cruiser’s dashboard camera records the deputy following the car on the wrong side of the road with sirens activated as he attempted to get the driver to stop.

About 13 seconds into that portion of the pursuit, the errant car collided head-on with a sedan and then struck a pickup truck, which was pushed into the first vehicle. The force of the crashes scattered debris across the highway, leaving glass, twisted metal and personal items strewn across the roadway.

Body-worn camera footage shows the deputy immediately stopping to render aid. He first approached the vehicle believed to have caused the crash and opened a rear driver-side door where an airbag had deployed and filled the back seat. He then checked on occupants of the other two vehicles; some people had already exited their cars by that time.

Officials said no major injuries were reported and emphasized the incident was preventable. The driver who caused the crash was arrested and faces charges including first-offense operating while intoxicated, driving on the wrong side of a two-way highway and failing to yield to an emergency vehicle. The sheriff’s office said the investigation is ongoing and used the incident to remind drivers of the dangers of impaired or distracted driving.
