At about 7:30 a.m. on Nov. 17, a crowded inter-city bus in São Paulo experienced a reported braking-system failure on a road adjacent to the Raposo Tavares Highway, sending the vehicle into nearby traffic and injuring passengers and bystanders.
What happened
Video from the scene shows the bus striking a curb, mounting the sidewalk and striking parked and moving vehicles as passengers screamed. Witnesses say the vehicle sped uncontrollably for nearly a minute while the driver struggled to steer. The bus finally came to a stop when it crashed into the security gate of a condominium close to the highway.
Casualties and damage
Officials reported that about 13 people were injured. A preliminary breakdown listed two people seriously hurt, two with moderate injuries and several others with minor injuries.
