Two teenagers killed in rollover crash after passing attempt on State Road 33
Two teenagers were killed and several others hospitalized after a two-vehicle crash on Florida’s State Road 33 on the evening of Saturday, Nov. 15. According to the Florida Highway Patrol and local reporting, the collision occurred at about 6 p.m. when a 16-year-old girl driving a 2008 Toyota Scion attempted to pass another vehicle in a marked no-passing zone.
The teen driver moved into the northbound lane and encountered a 2021 Lincoln Aviator driven by a 75-year-old man from Lakeland. She attempted to steer back into her lane but investigators say she lost control. The Scion veered into the northbound lane, where it was struck by the Lincoln and subsequently overturned.
The driver and a teenage passenger were pronounced dead at the scene. The victims were later identified in local reporting as 16-year-old Jade and 17-year-old Jose Ivan, students at South Lake High School in Groveland. Lake County Schools said it was "deeply saddened to confirm the tragic loss of two South Lake High School students" and that grief counselors would be available on campus for students and staff.
Four occupants of the Lincoln were taken to nearby hospitals. A 6-year-old child in the Aviator was reported to have sustained serious injuries; the Aviator’s 75-year-old driver and two other passengers — a 66-year-old woman and a 5-year-old boy — suffered minor injuries and were transported for treatment.
"The car, it was in pieces. It was a really, really bad accident, really bad," witness Nelida Capo told local TV.
Family tributes posted on GoFundMe remembered Jade as "full of love, laughter, and a spirit that brightened every room she walked into," and described Jose Ivan as "a bright, kind, and loving young man with his whole future ahead of him." Friends and relatives held a memorial at Lake Catherine Farms on Monday, Nov. 17.
The Florida Highway Patrol did not immediately respond to requests for additional comment. Local authorities continue to investigate the crash to determine the full sequence of events.
