A vehicle exploded on Monday evening near a metro station adjacent to the historic Red Fort (Lal Qila) in Old Delhi, killing at least 10 people and seriously injuring more than 30, officials said.
Dr. Manish Kumar Jha of Lok Nayak Hospital told reporters that more than 30 people were brought in with severe injuries and that "many are not in a position of recovering," underscoring the seriousness of the casualties.
What happened
Delhi Police Commissioner Satish Golcha said the vehicle was "slow-moving" and came to a stop near a red light at about 6:42 p.m. local time (18:42 IST / 13:12 UTC). "An explosion occurred in that vehicle. The passengers in the vehicle and people in surrounding vehicles were impacted," Golcha said.
Delhi's deputy fire chief told Reuters that at least six cars and three autorickshaws were set on fire in the blast. Fire services received the first call at 6:55 p.m. local time (18:55 IST / 13:25 UTC) and extinguished the flames, Sumit Kumar of Delhi Fire Services said. Survivors were taken to nearby hospitals, including Lok Nayak Hospital.
Response and investigation
Indian Home Minister Amit Shah visited the scene and said authorities were reviewing nearby surveillance footage. Commissioner Golcha said police were "investigating the explosion from every angle" and that the situation remained under close watch.
The Central Industrial Security Force announced heightened security at airports, railway stations, government buildings and heritage sites across the country while investigations continue. The Red Fort, a 17th-century Mughal-era citadel and UNESCO World Heritage Site, is a prominent tourist and ceremonial site in Delhi.

Video of the aftermath showed motorcyclists and bystanders running toward the scene as large orange flames rose into the night. Neighbors reported hearing a loud bang and feeling windows shake. "We heard a big sound. Our windows shook," one resident told broadcaster NDTV. Rajdhar Pandey, who lives nearby, told CNN affiliate CNN News-18 that he saw the flames from his home.
Prime Minister Narendra Modi expressed condolences to the families of the dead and wished the injured a speedy recovery in a post on X. Defense Minister Rajnath Singh described the blast as "painful and disturbing" and said he was praying for the injured.
