Powerful 6.3-magnitude quake strikes northern Afghanistan
Kabul — A strong 6.3-magnitude earthquake rattled northern Afghanistan early Monday, the U.S. Geological Survey reported. Officials said there were no immediate reports of damage or casualties.
The USGS located the quake's epicenter 22 kilometers (14 miles) west-southwest of Khulm, with a depth of 28 kilometers. The agency recorded the event at 12:59 a.m. local time.
This area has suffered deadly temblors in recent years: a magnitude 6.0 quake on Aug. 31, 2025, in eastern Afghanistan near the Pakistan border killed more than 2,200 people. On Oct. 7, 2023, a magnitude 6.3 earthquake followed by strong aftershocks reportedly left at least 4,000 people dead, according to the Taliban government.
Local authorities and international monitoring agencies routinely assess seismic activity in the region for possible aftershocks and damage reports. No further updates have been released yet; this report will be updated as new information becomes available.
