Federal regulators and G.L. Mezzetta Inc. have issued a recall for a single lot of Mezzetta Brand Golden Greek Peperoncini after a social media video appeared to show a dead rodent inside a 32-ounce jar of the pickled peppers.
What Happened
The video, which first surfaced on Sept. 16, shows an unnamed customer holding up a jar of Medium Heat Golden Greek Peperoncini and saying, "There's a dead baby mouse in my peperoncinis." The customer also said she had already tasted the product before discovering the object.
Recall Details
The recall notice, issued by G.L. Mezzetta Inc., applies only to lot 720106 (SKU 10106328) of the 32-ounce Mezzetta Golden Greek Peperoncini, Medium Heat. No other Mezzetta products or lots are included in the recall. Mezzetta said it is requesting retrieval of the original jar shown in the video for examination as part of its investigation.
"Food safety is our highest priority. Our facilities follow established programs for sanitation, pest control, product quality and traceability designed to protect our products throughout production and distribution," the company said in a statement.
Company Actions and Consumer Guidance
Mezzetta says it has identified where jars from the affected lot were distributed and has contacted customers who purchased items from that batch. The company is working with retailers and distributors to isolate and remove the affected product from sale.
