Why Republicans Keep Targeting Furries — And What Furry Fandom Actually Is

Republicans have repeatedly targeted furries — a mostly creative fandom focused on anthropomorphic characters — using myths and sensational claims. Experts say most furries are young and many identify as LGBTQ+, and only a minority own full "fursuits." There is no evidence that private participation in furry fandom harms public safety; political attacks often serve as distraction or proxy stigmatization of queer people.

Republican lawmakers and commentators have repeatedly singled out furries — a fandom centered on anthropomorphic animal characters — as a cultural boogeyman. From debunked claims about litter boxes in schools to a viral Senate rant about airline workers, these attacks often rely on myths, caricature, and confusion about what the community really does.

What Is Furry Fandom?

Furry fandom is a creative community in which people create and embody anthropomorphic animal characters — often called fursonas — through art, writing, roleplay, and performance. As Xavier Ho, co-founder of Furry Studies, put it, many participants "create imaginary animal-themed characters that represent themselves and express those characters through drawing, writing and performance." Like other fandoms, furries watch media, buy merchandise, and gather at conventions.

Conventions, Fursuits, And Misperceptions

Some members wear mascot-style costumes called fursuits, but full suits are relatively uncommon: surveys estimate only about 10%–15% of furries own a full fursuit. While sexual content exists in parts of the fandom — as it does in many large online communities — that does not define the culture for most participants.

"Furry culture is actually much more about imagination, creativity and play," said Elizabeth Nickrenz, a researcher of fan cultures.

Political Attacks And Viral Myths

High-profile conservatives such as Texas Gov. Greg Abbott, Nebraska Sen. Bruce Bostelman and former Fox host Megyn Kelly have amplified sensational claims about furries. One debunked urban myth even alleged that schools placed litter boxes in classrooms for students identifying as animals; Bostelman later apologized for repeating that false story. Last year, Texas lawmakers considered — but did not pass — a bill that would have banned "non-human" behavior in public schools.

"A common misperception about furries is that they think they are actually animals or that they want to be animals. Sen. Tommy Tuberville (R-Ala.) revived attention to the issue with a Senate-floor rant suggesting many airline pilots and flight attendants are "part of the furry community," and warning passengers that a pilot might have a "deranged desire to dress up like an animal." He shared a viral radio clip of pilots making animal noises; Wired later reported there was no evidence the pilots were furries and suggested the exchange may have referenced a joke from the film Super Troopers. Tuberville's remarks were widely mocked, including by late-night shows and political opponents.

Overlap With LGBTQ+ Communities And Demographics

Researchers note significant overlap between furry fandom and queer communities: some surveys suggest around 75% of furries identify as LGBTQ+. The fandom also skews young — with more than 75% reportedly under age 25 — which helps explain generational and cultural friction with older conservative politicians. That intersection makes attacks on furries an indirect way to stigmatize LGBTQ+ people.

Are Furries A Safety Risk In Workplaces?

Claims that pilots or other professionals pose a risk because of private hobbies are unsupported. Wired spoke with some airline workers who identify as furries, noting possible reasons for occasional overlap (frequent travel for conventions, concentrated special interests among neurodivergent people). However, there is no evidence that being a furry affects job performance or flight safety.

Why Politicians Target Furries

Experts say mocking furries is an effective culture-war tactic: the costumes are visually striking and easy to ridicule, making them useful for distracting from policy failures or stigmatizing marginalized groups without engaging with more complex issues. Framing furries as bizarre or dangerous taps into a pattern of moral panic around schools, youth culture, and LGBTQ+-inclusive policies.

Bottom Line

Furry fandom is primarily a creative, often queer and largely young community focused on play, art, and identity. While sexualized content and costuming exist within the fandom, they represent a minority of activity. Political attacks on furries often rely on myths and caricature and function as proxy attacks on LGBTQ+ people or as attention-grabbing distractions from substantive policy debates.
