An Uber driver’s concerns led to the arrest of 31-year-old Prit Pankaj Jain of Mumbai after deputies discovered an alleged online relationship between Jain and a juvenile. Investigators say Jain misrepresented his identity on social media, traveled from India to North Carolina to re-establish contact after being blocked, and now faces nine charges related to sexual exploitation and extortion. He remains held without bond; his next court appearance is October 6 at 2 p.m.
Uber Driver’s Tip Leads To Arrest Of Man From Mumbai Accused Of Targeting Juvenile

An Uber driver in northern Davidson County, North Carolina, alerted deputies after becoming concerned about a passenger’s destination. That tip led investigators to arrest 31-year-old Prit Pankaj Jain of Mumbai, India, and uncover an alleged long-term online relationship with a juvenile.
What Happened
Deputies from the Davidson County Sheriff’s Office responded to the Meadowlands community on September 24 following a report of a verbal disturbance. The driver told officers the adult male passenger appeared to be following or stalking a juvenile female. Deputies located Jain, who said he had come to the neighborhood to leave gifts for a woman he had been communicating with online.
Investigation Details
Detectives from the Criminal Investigations Division and Digital Forensic Specialists examined Jain’s mobile devices and questioned him to determine how the relationship began and why he traveled from Mumbai to North Carolina. Investigators say Jain concealed his real identity on social media, portraying himself as a younger man and entering into a prolonged online relationship with the juvenile.
According to the sheriff’s office, the juvenile later discovered Jain’s true identity, ended the relationship and blocked him. Investigators say Jain nevertheless traveled to the United States in an attempt to re-establish contact.
Charges and Court Status
Following the investigation, the sheriff’s office charged Jain with nine offenses: four counts of first-degree sexual exploitation of a minor, four counts of third-degree sexual exploitation of a minor, and one count of sexual extortion. He was initially ordered held without bond at the Davidson County Detention Center and appeared in District Court on September 25, where the judicial official ordered he remain detained without bond.
County inmate records supplied to local reporting list Jain as held without bond and show a next court appearance scheduled for October 6 at 2 p.m. The online inmate entry lists four counts of third-degree sexual exploitation of a minor and an entry labeled "Other - All Other," while the sheriff’s office release provides the more detailed nine-charge breakdown.
Context
Authorities say the arrest underscores the role that alert community members and transportation workers can play in identifying suspicious behavior. The investigation remains active as detectives continue to review digital evidence and prepare the case for prosecution.
