The AI-generated vinyl mural on the Jolly Colliers pub in Bedminster, Bristol, was removed after local backlash. Community members and artists criticised the sticker as a "disrespectful affront" and accused the pub owners of "laziness." Punch Pubs & Co described the image as a "temporary solution" and said it will work with local artists on replacements. Upfest organisers plan to commission new murals in the city centre, underscoring Bristol's strong street-art identity.

An AI-generated vinyl mural that had been applied to the side wall of the Jolly Colliers pub in Bedminster, Bristol, has been removed following local criticism.

The sticker, placed on Wednesday, depicted recognisable Bristol imagery including hot air balloons and the Clifton Suspension Bridge. It was sited in the area that hosts Upfest, billed as Europe’s largest street art festival.

A spokesperson for Punch Pubs & Co, which owns the pub, reiterated that the image was a "temporary solution" and said the company is working with local artists to create a replacement.

Local Reaction

Before it was taken down, an anonymous community member taped a letter to the building calling the artwork a "disrespectful affront" to a city known for its creative scene and accusing the owners of "laziness." Local artists speaking to the BBC described the piece as "careless and rushed," and wider community members criticised the use of AI-generated imagery in such a prominent location.

What Happens Next

Organisers of Upfest have said they plan to commission and install new murals in Bristol city centre, emphasising the city's strong street-art heritage and the importance of original work created by local artists.

The episode has reignited debate about the role of AI in public art, and about how businesses should engage with local creative communities when commissioning or installing street-level artwork.
