Zohran Mamdani is right that our political system has failed many Americans. The growth of his brand of socialism is alarming, but it should not surprise those who have watched Washington repeatedly fail to deliver policies that work for families and workers.
Why So Many Americans Are Frustrated
Every election cycle, establishment politicians promise to hold government accountable, lower costs and protect the American Dream. Those pledges have become predictable rhetoric while outcomes have steadily worsened. Instead of reining in government, Washington has expanded federal authority and driven national debt toward roughly $40 trillion through sustained, large-scale spending.
Despite repeated promises to reduce the cost of living, Congress has approved spending measures that have contributed to higher prices and rising interest rates. Under the pretext of protecting citizens, the federal government has extended its reach into many areas of daily life, stifled opportunity and burdened entrepreneurs with an ever-growing regulatory apparatus.
Why Socialism Is Not the Answer
Young Americans’ anger is real and understandable. Many face a future where homeownership, reliable health care and family formation are more difficult than for prior generations. But socialism is not a solution — it replaces private opportunity with centralized control that can determine where you work, how much you earn and even what medical care is available. Survivors of socialist regimes, including Cuban and Venezuelan émigrés in Florida, can attest to the costs of such systems.
Socialism trades the promise of security for the reality of reduced freedom and diminished opportunity.
A Practical Plan to Reignite the American Dream
The alternative is straightforward: listen to ordinary Americans and reshape government to serve their highest priorities. Specifically, Washington should focus on three central reforms:
- Balance the federal budget by cutting wasteful and low-value spending so we stop adding to a multi-decade, roughly $40 trillion debt and the more than $1 trillion a year we now spend in interest costs.
- Slash unnecessary federal regulations that slow permitting, raise costs and discourage entrepreneurship.
- Make job creation the top federal priority through tax relief, targeted investment and policies that spur private-sector hiring.
These steps are complementary: fiscal discipline lowers interest costs and helps tame inflationary pressures; regulatory relief reduces the cost and time to start and grow businesses; and pro-growth tax and investment policies incentivize private-sector job creation.
Experience From Florida
When I served as governor of Florida, we cut more than 5,000 burdensome regulations, shortened permitting timelines from months to days, eliminated needless hurdles that did not affect safety, and reduced costs for entrepreneurs. The result was a sustained period of private-sector job growth — roughly 1.7 million new private-sector jobs over eight years — demonstrating how targeted state reforms can deliver opportunity.
What This Means For Families
Balancing the budget and reducing regulatory overhead would help Americans keep more of their paychecks, reduce the cost of borrowing for homes and cars, and create the conditions for businesses to hire, expand and invest in communities. If Congress fails to curb its spending addiction, critical programs will face hard choices, interest rates and prices will remain elevated, and the next generation will remain at risk of economic stagnation.
The American Dream is damaged but not beyond repair. I have launched a project to rescue that dream by exposing how big government and poor policy choices have betrayed ordinary Americans and by mapping a path back to opportunity — the sort of path that allowed a poor kid raised in public housing to become a CEO, two-term governor and United States senator.
If we want to spare future generations the hardships of authoritarian approaches, we must show them the opportunities freedom offers when Washington works to expand, not constrain, those opportunities.
