Matrix Wildfire’s SENTINEL combines a locomotive, two 20,000‑gallon tanks and a twin-turbine dispersion unit to create a mobile wildfire‑mitigation corridor capable of a 328‑ft straight stream and roughly 500‑ft coverage. CitroTech supplies a clear, long‑duration liquid suppressant the company says is recognized by EPA Safer Choice and tested to UL Greenguard Gold standards. The system is intended primarily as a proactive defense to protect tracks, bridges and signals; the suppressant remains effective until washed away by heavy rain.
Railroads Gain Mobile Wildfire Shield: Matrix Wildfire’s SENTINEL and CitroTech Suppressant

Two Colorado companies have introduced a rail-mounted wildfire-mitigation system designed to protect railroad rights of way from encroaching fires. Matrix Wildfire developed the SENTINEL platform, a railborne dispersion system, while CitroTech supplies a clear liquid suppressant that can be applied from the train or by smaller field crews.
How the System Works
The baseline SENTINEL configuration pairs a locomotive and two 20,000‑gallon tank cars with a flatcar-mounted twin-turbine dispersion assembly. The system can project either a focused straight stream or a wide-angle fog from a central nozzle and deploy a turbine mist ring fitted with 20 full-cone atomizing nozzles to produce micro-droplets driven by an integrated fan.
Key Performance Specs
- Straight-stream reach: up to 328 feet
- Effective solution application range: up to 250 feet
- Atomized mist range: up to 121 feet
- Mitigation corridor: roughly 500 feet wide (360° swivel capability)
- Peak flow: up to 2,492 gallons per minute
- Maximum pressure: 232.1 psi; vertical elevation adjustment: up to 43°
The central nozzle and the mist ring can be operated independently or simultaneously, and the system is compatible with water, firefighting chemical agents, or other liquid suppressants approved for use.
CitroTech Suppressant
CitroTech provides a transparent liquid fire suppressant the company says is "the only long-term fire inhibitor recognized by the EPA Safer Choice program and tested to UL Greenguard Gold standards." Matrix Wildfire and CitroTech present the chemical as a long-duration treatment that remains effective on treated vegetation or structures until it is removed by heavy rain.
Matrix positions CitroTech as a key component for Class I and short-line railroads seeking industrial-scale wildfire protection. While the SENTINEL can be deployed to help suppress active fires, both firms emphasize its principal value is the proactive creation of defended corridors to stop approaching wildfires before they threaten track, bridges, signals and other infrastructure.
"Wildfires pose a serious threat to railroads of all sizes because flames, smoke and extreme heat can damage track, bridges, signals, communications systems and the surrounding terrain, while also disrupting operations across the broader rail network," said Ted Greener, spokesman for the Association of American Railroads. "Freight railroads prepare year-round by managing vegetation, inspecting infrastructure and equipment, monitoring conditions and coordinating with emergency responders."
Use Cases and Availability
CitroTech can be supplied directly to railroads or carried by Matrix for application from the SENTINEL. The chemical is also suitable for smaller-scale tasks: it can be applied with a backpack sprayer for localized protection during rail welding or loaded into a container with a pump for pickup-truck deployments, such as treating vulnerable bridges.
Major freight carriers including BNSF Railway, Union Pacific, Canadian National and CPKC operate their own fire trains, and railroads looking for additional protection may consider SENTINEL deployments or CitroTech treatments as part of a broader resilience strategy.
