Chicago police have arrested a 15-year-old girl and charged her with first-degree murder and related felonies after authorities say a 29-year-old man was pushed from a moving Chicago Transit Authority (CTA) Red Line train during an altercation.
The victim was identified by the Cook County Medical Examiner as Kyle T. Bickham. Police say the incident occurred around 2:30 p.m. Monday near the 69th Street Red Line station on the city’s South Side. Investigators initially reported that a person had jumped from a moving train, but later concluded Bickham was pushed during a confrontation involving three people.
After falling from the train, Bickham landed on the electrified third rail and was struck by a following train. He was pronounced dead at the scene, and the medical examiner ruled the death a homicide. Police say the arrested teenager faces multiple felony counts, including first-degree murder, murder during the commission of a forcible felony, mob action and aggravated battery to a transit passenger.
Authorities have not released the names of the other two people they say were involved, and it is unclear whether any additional arrests have been made. Because the suspect is 15, officials have not released her name or identifying information; her case is expected to proceed through the juvenile justice system. She was scheduled for a court appearance on Saturday.
Family Remembers Bickham
Bickham’s family said he had been returning to Lansing after an overnight shift at an Amazon warehouse in Cicero. Relatives described him as hardworking, caring and devoted to his family. His mother, Latanya Bickham, told local media her son was “simply trying to make an honest living” when he was killed. His father, Christopher Bickham Sr., and other family members remembered his sense of humor, his poetry and the way he lifted the mood in a room.
Investigation Ongoing
Chicago police continue their investigation into the circumstances of Bickham’s death and the identities and possible roles of the other people involved in the altercation. Authorities have publicly announced only the teen’s arrest so far and say they are still gathering evidence and witness statements.
