Melania Trump Praises White House Redesign at Preservation Summit While President Attends Midterm Rally

First Lady Melania Trump remained in Washington, D.C., to speak at the White House Historical Association's Presidential Sites Summit while President Donald Trump flew to Dallas to attend the Republican Party's midterm rally.

The three-day summit brought preservation professionals, officials and cultural stewards together to discuss “lessons learned, future collaborations, and strategies for sustaining relevance in a dynamic cultural landscape,” according to reporting from the Daily Beast. At the event, the first lady delivered a talk titled "The White House: America's Architectural Autobiography."

In her remarks, Melania framed the executive residence as a symbol of national identity and the product of cumulative design choices. She argued that small design decisions—lines, textures and the use of natural light—contribute to how people perceive history and civic life.

“Design is a meticulous process that involves a multitude of choices—each line, texture and play of natural light contributes to an overarching narrative. No detail is too small; what may seem insignificant today can influence how individuals connect with one another and perceive their place in history,” she said. “Within the walls of the White House, these experiences become essential to our national identity.”

The first lady highlighted specific projects from her first term, saying she had uncovered hidden wallpaper in the Presidential Dining Room and overseen renovations to the White House Tennis Pavilion. She noted that the pavilion work was carried out "in collaboration with the Trust for the National Mall, the Executive Residence, and the National Park Service, and approved by the Committee for the Preservation of the White House, the Commission of Fine Arts, and the National Capital Planning Commission in 2018," and said the project was designed to harmonize with the White House's neoclassical character.

Criticism and Legal Challenges

Reporters and preservation critics have highlighted other, larger changes to the White House and its grounds under the Trump administration. Coverage has cited alterations including gold-accented interiors that some observers called "tacky," the removal or significant alteration of parts of the grounds to accommodate new construction, and other high-profile projects across Washington, D.C.

Media reports have described several disputed projects, including the reported removal of the East Wing to make way for a combined ballroom and an operational facility, the installation of a patio in part of the Rose Garden, and the construction of a helipad on the South Lawn. The National Trust for Historic Preservation sued in an effort to halt ballroom construction; the Supreme Court denied the Trust's challenge last month, allowing work to proceed.

Despite the controversy, the first lady emphasized stewardship: "As stewards of the places shaped by those before us, we are tasked with making decisions that honor future generations. It is our duty to ensure that the choices we make today are worthy of the legacy we pass forward," she told attendees.

Photographs show Melania speaking in the Rose Garden in August 2026, and she returned to that garden in September to deliver the summit remarks rather than join her husband in Dallas (AFP/Getty).
