Alberta's July opening of a private iGaming market has unleashed a surge of gambling ads across the province, triggering concern from public-health experts and addiction researchers. Academics warn that relentless marketing combined with easy at-home access may raise rates of problem gambling among youth and vulnerable residents. Industry competition has driven high-profile product launches and promotions, while analysts expect advertising intensity to remain elevated for about three to six months before easing.
Surge in Alberta Gambling Ads Raises Public-Health Alarm as Operators Flood Market

Since Alberta opened its regulated iGaming market to private operators in July, the province has seen a sharp and highly visible increase in online gambling advertising. The wave of marketing — across television, digital platforms and public spaces — has prompted public-health professionals and addiction researchers to warn of potential harms, particularly for young people and other vulnerable groups.
Public-Health Concerns
Academics and health workers say relentless promotion plus easy at-home access to betting could increase problem gambling. Paul Messinger, a marketing professor at the University of Alberta, told CBC News he is uneasy about how rapidly gambling promotion has escalated. Messinger contrasted traditional, highly regulated venues such as casinos and racetracks with online platforms that deliver wagering directly into people’s homes, arguing that the combo of instant access and nonstop advertising may push some players to gamble beyond their means.
"Immediate access, combined with relentless promotional messages, can encourage some people to gamble more than they can afford," Messinger said.
Industry Response and Product Push
Alberta became the second Canadian province, after Ontario, to permit private sports-betting operators and online casinos to register and operate legally. The rollout attracted national and international companies competing for market share with aggressive campaigns and new product launches.
Recent product highlights include a "Game of Thrones" slot launched at BetMGM Casino in Alberta — developed with Warner Bros. Discovery Global Experiences and featuring a Money Collect mechanic that unlocks sigils tied to the show's houses. Bally's Corporation also expanded into Alberta this month, launching Bally Bet and Monopoly Casino & Sportsbook through the Alberta iGaming Corporation.
Those entries bring Alberta to 26 registered iGaming sites, joining major operators such as DraftKings, FanDuel, bet365 and Caesars.
Market Dynamics and Outlook
Experts expect the current intensity of advertising to be temporary. Most analysts predict elevated marketing activity for roughly three to six months while competitors establish market share; advertising should then ease as the market stabilizes. Messinger and other observers say monitoring and strengthened responsible-gambling measures will be important during this high-exposure period.
Business Notes
Bally Bet is now live in 15 North American jurisdictions, and Bally's interactive division reported 36% year-over-year revenue growth in Q1 2026. The company also holds a significant economic stake in Intralot, a lottery-technology provider that supports provincial lottery organizations across Canada.
What To Watch: public-health monitoring of problem gambling rates, uptake among younger players, the durability of aggressive ad spending, and any regulation or industry-led responsible-gambling initiatives introduced in response.
