Michael Moore told CNN viewers that Democrats must replace establishment figures after Dr. Abdul El‑Sayed upset Haley Stevens in Michigan's costly Senate primary. Moore praised El‑Sayed and warned that the party's old approach cost Democrats in 2024. Donald Trump fired back on Truth Social, labeling Moore a "LOWLIFE" and defending his administration's economic record. El‑Sayed will face Republican Mike Rogers in November.

President Donald Trump sharply criticized filmmaker and commentator Michael Moore on Wednesday after Moore urged progressive Democrats to push aside party leaders following a surprise primary result in Michigan.

Moore's Message on CNN

Appearing on CNN during coverage of the Michigan U.S. Senate primary, Moore argued that Democrats must change course to win future national elections. He praised Dr. Abdul El‑Sayed, who defeated establishment-backed Rep. Haley Stevens in the high-profile contest.

"If I could get on my knees and beg it would be for exactly what you said, because we are not going to win the other way," Moore said. "We lost that way in '24. It's not going to happen if we allow this to happen. We are in charge of this and we need to get busy right now."

Moore also attacked party "hacks" and recalled helping El‑Sayed's 2018 gubernatorial campaign. "Boy, we would be so lucky if he were our senator," Moore said, praising El‑Sayed's stance on humanitarian concerns.

The Michigan Primary Context

Dr. Abdul El‑Sayed's upset over Haley Stevens was one of the year's most closely watched primaries. The race became the most expensive Senate primary in U.S. history after reports that the American Israel Public Affairs Committee (AIPAC) spent more than $30 million on ads supporting Stevens. Stevens reportedly entered the contest with roughly a nine‑to‑one spending advantage. El‑Sayed has called for ending certain U.S. aid and arms shipments to Israel, a position that set the race apart from establishment-backed messaging.

Trump's Response on Truth Social

Trump posted a blunt rebuttal on Truth Social, attacking Moore's credibility and defending his administration's record. His post included personal insults aimed at Moore and praise for what he described as the administration's economic achievements.

"Michael Moore, the failed political 'pundit' who has been losing to me for years... You've been a Loser all your life... He knows you are a failed LOWLIFE... For thousands of years, the concept of Communist Policies have never worked... especially under the tremendous transformational SUCCESS that the Trump Administration has brought forth — Best Economic Numbers, EVER... This is the Golden Age of America."

Trump concluded by predicting continued political battles and invoking his campaign slogan.

Looking Ahead

El‑Sayed will face former Rep. Mike Rogers (R‑MI) in the general election in November. The Michigan race — and the wider debate over party direction raised by Moore's remarks — could shape national Democratic strategy ahead of the fall campaign.
