The Clacton by-election on 13 August features a record 34 candidates, creating what is thought to be the longest UK parliamentary ballot paper. Major parties are standing aside for Reform UK leader Nigel Farage, leaving 33 smaller-party and independent challengers. Eight entrants are repeat national candidates — including Laurence Fox, Count Binface and Howling Laud Hope — and the BBC analysis details their past runs, best results and whether they have reclaimed electoral deposits.
Record Field Of 34 Candidates Faces Nigel Farage In Clacton By-Election

A record 34 candidates will contest the Clacton by-election on 13 August, producing what is believed to be the longest UK parliamentary ballot paper in history. With the main parties standing aside for Reform UK leader Nigel Farage, 33 smaller-party and independent challengers will compete for the seat.
Why This Contest Is Unusual
The absence of major-party challengers has left the ballot dominated by minor parties, independents and well-known repeat entrants. Electoral law allows a registered party to nominate more than one candidate in a parliamentary by-election so long as each nomination is valid and authorised by the party's nominating officer.
Parliamentary candidates must be nominated by 10 electors from the constituency and lodge a £500 deposit, returned only if they win more than 5% of the vote. Mayoral contests have stricter rules: for London mayoral bids, candidates must meet residency/work/property criteria in the capital, secure at least 10 nominations from each London borough and 10 from the City of London, and lodge a £10,000 deposit that is similarly returned only if they clear a 5% threshold.
Repeat National Candidates To Watch
Eight entrants on the Clacton ballot have already made at least three bids for Parliament or for Mayor of London. The BBC analysis counted UK House of Commons elections and London mayoral contests to determine repeat candidates; local elections, devolved parliaments, European Parliament and London Assembly contests were excluded.
Howling Laud Hope (Alan Hope)
Leader of the Official Monster Raving Loony Party, Hope has stood in 37 parliamentary elections since 1983. He stood against David Cameron in 2010 and Theresa May in 2017. His best result in the BBC review was the 2011 Leicester South by-election (553 votes, 1.6%). He has never reclaimed a £500 deposit. Previous attempts: 37. Deposits lost: 37.
Nick The Incredible Flying Brick (Nick Delves)
A Monster Raving Loony Party candidate in multiple contests, Delves has contested 13 parliamentary elections. His strongest showing in the dataset was West Derbyshire in 2001 (472 votes, 0.9%). He has not reclaimed a £500 deposit. Previous attempts: 13. Deposits lost: 13.
Joseph 77 (Tom Darwood)
Standing under the name Joseph 77, Tom Darwood has contested seven parliamentary elections. His best result in the review was Southend West in 2019 (574 votes, 1.2%). He has not reclaimed a £500 deposit. Previous attempts: 7. Deposits lost: 7.
Count Binface (Jon Harvey)
The satirical persona of comedian Jon Harvey, Count Binface has stood in four parliamentary and two London mayoral contests. He has appeared on the same ballots as sitting prime ministers in general elections (Boris Johnson in 2019 and Rishi Sunak in 2024) and previously stood as Lord Buckethead in 2017. His best parliamentary result in the BBC review was Richmond and Northallerton in 2024 (308 votes, 0.6%). He has not reclaimed any deposits. Previous attempts: 6. Deposits lost: 6.
Baron Von Thunderclap (Peter Berry)
Another Monster Raving Loony Party entrant, Berry has contested six parliamentary elections. Clacton is his first parliamentary by-election and his first race outside Mid Sussex; his best result recorded in the review was the 2001 general election (601 votes, 1.3%). He has not reclaimed a £500 deposit. Previous attempts: 6. Deposits lost: 6.
John Stevens
The former Conservative MEP, now standing for the Rejoin EU Party, has appeared on four parliamentary ballots. His standout performance was as an independent in Buckingham in 2010, when he finished second of 11 with 10,331 votes (21.4%) in a contest where major parties traditionally do not oppose the Speaker. Stevens is the only Clacton candidate in this field who has previously beaten Nigel Farage on votes in a parliamentary contest and who reclaimed his £500 deposit. Previous attempts: 4. Deposits lost: 3.
William Clouston
Leader of the Social Democratic Party, Clouston has contested two parliamentary elections. In Hexham at the 2024 general election he finished last of six with 1,211 votes (2.3%). He has not reclaimed a £500 deposit. Previous attempts: 2. Deposits lost: 2.
Laurence Fox
Actor-turned-commentator and leader of the Reclaim Party, Fox has previously stood in the 2023 Uxbridge and South Ruislip by-election and in a London mayoral race. In Uxbridge he finished fourth of 17 with 714 votes (2.3%). He has not reclaimed his deposits. Previous attempts: 2. Deposits lost: 2.
Context On Nigel Farage
Nigel Farage has previously stood in multiple parliamentary contests since 1994 and was elected MP for Clacton in the 2024 general election. The by-election will test local and national interest in the seat now that major parties have stood aside.
