An autopsy released on July 29 confirmed that 55-year-old Erica Fox drowned after a single shark bite off California's Central Coast in December. The report found the attack fractured her pelvis and severed a major artery, leading to fatal injuries and submersion.
Autopsy Findings
The coroner determined the cause of death as "sharp and blunt force injuries and submersion in water due to a shark attack." According to the report, the wound encircled Fox's right knee, extended across her thighs and onto her abdomen, and tore both her wetsuit and swimsuit.
Search and Recovery
Fox left Lovers Point near Monterey on Dec. 21 with about a dozen other open-water swimmers and did not return. During the search, a motorist reported seeing a shark emerge from the water carrying what appeared to be a human body. California firefighters later recovered Fox's remains on Dec. 27 from a beach northwest of Santa Cruz.
Context and Statistics
Shark fatalities in California are rare: there were 16 shark-related deaths in the state in the 75 years before Fox's death. University of Florida researchers reported Fox was one of 12 worldwide shark-bite fatalities in 2025 and the only recorded shark-bite death in the United States that year, according to the International Shark Attack File. The report also noted a rise in unprovoked shark incidents globally in 2025, though experts emphasize the statistical risk to individuals remains very low.
Remembering Erica Fox
Fox co-founded the Kelp Krawlers open-water swimming club in Monterey and was an experienced triathlete with podium finishes at the annual Escape From Alcatraz event. Her husband, Jean-Francois Vanreusal, told the Monterey Herald:
"The only comfort I find is that Erica… really passed in the place she loved."
