Police in Ho Chi Minh City seized more than 400 cats in a raid that authorities say interrupted an alleged cat-meat network and led to nine arrests. About 40 cats have been reunited with owners; over 260 remain in custody while veterinarians and volunteers provide medical care. The rescue included pregnant cats and kittens born after the operation, highlighting the urgent need for shelter and rehabilitation.

Police in Ho Chi Minh City recovered more than 400 cats in a raid that investigators say disrupted an alleged cat-meat supply chain and exposed a wave of pet thefts. The operation led to nine arrests and created an urgent need for veterinary care, temporary housing and reunification efforts.

Following tips about missing pets, authorities located hundreds of animals being kept in unsafe, crowded conditions. Humane World for Animals and other animal-welfare groups called the seizure potentially one of the largest cat-meat busts documented in Vietnam.

According to Humane World for Animals, roughly 40 of the cats have already been reclaimed by owners who had reported missing pets. More than 260 animals remain in police custody while veterinarians, volunteers and rescue groups provide medical checks, vaccinations, feeding and separate care for mothers and newborn kittens.

The rescued animals included pregnant females and kittens born after the raid, increasing the logistical and medical demands on temporary shelters. Organizers had to arrange feeding, monitoring and safe, segregated housing for mothers and their young.

Police say they arrested nine people allegedly connected to a group "specializing in stealing and collecting cats." Cases like this can reveal how organized illicit animal trades operate and help authorities identify theft patterns, networks and points of sale.

Why This Matters

The immediate impact was removing hundreds of animals from the alleged supply chain and giving owners a chance to identify and reclaim missing pets. Long term, the investigation could support stronger prevention, better community awareness and targeted enforcement against animal trafficking.

Phuong Tham, Country Director at Humane World for Animals: "The sad truth about this trade is that thousands of cats every month are being stolen, trafficked, and slaughtered for meat across the country... Thankfully these survivors escaped that fate, but this large seizure and the swift actions of the police are a welcome step in the crackdown that is badly needed on this trade."

Local charities and volunteers continue stabilizing the rescued cats, providing veterinary care and temporary shelter until owners can be located or animals are rehabilitated. Members of the public who wish to help are encouraged to support reputable animal-welfare organizations through donations or volunteer time rather than donating directly at scenes.

What to Watch For: Follow-up reports may include details about prosecutions, the fate of the animals still in custody, and steps authorities take to prevent future thefts and illegal trade.
