About 250,000 people are expected to gather in Hamburg on Saturday for the northern German port city's Pride celebration, held one week after a deadly attack at Berlin Pride that left one woman dead and 31 people injured.
Heightened Security
Hamburg police have said they will deploy twice as many officers as last year to secure the Christopher Street Day (CSD) demonstration. Organisers expect a strong turnout and a visible security presence throughout the parade route.
Tribute From Berlin CSD
A float from the Berlin CSD association is scheduled to participate in the march. Participants from Berlin plan to wear dark clothing as a tribute to the victims and to show solidarity with those affected by the attack.
What Happened In Berlin
Last weekend in Berlin, an attacker identified as Abdul B, 21, drove a car into a crowd and then reportedly attacked additional people on the margins of the CSD — apparently with a machete. Authorities say one woman was killed and 31 people were injured. The suspect was shot dead by police on Sunday evening.
Other Pride Events
Pride events are also planned for Saturday in other European cities including Amsterdam and Brighton. Within Germany, CSD events are scheduled in Bonn, Ahaus, Moers and Naumburg.
About Christopher Street Day (CSD)
CSD commemorates the 1969 Stonewall protests in New York, which began after a police raid on the Stonewall Inn on Christopher Street. The demonstrations helped catalyse a global movement for lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender rights.
