U.S. regulators have recalled about 121,680 Galanz Retro refrigerators after 34 reports of fires, including one that reportedly caused a death. A defect in internal electrical components can short circuit and ignite. Affected units were made from Dec 2018 to Dec 2020 and sold at Home Depot and Amazon from Jan 2019 to Sept 2022 for $330–$520. Consumers should unplug recalled units immediately and contact Galanz to schedule a free in‑home repair.
Over 121,000 Galanz ‘Retro’ Refrigerators Recalled After 34 Fires And One Reported Death

Federal regulators have issued a recall for roughly 121,680 Galanz Retro refrigerators following multiple reports of fires and at least one reported fatality. The U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC) says an internal electrical defect can short circuit and ignite, creating a serious fire and burn hazard.
What Happened
The CPSC has received 34 reports of fires involving the affected Galanz Retro units, including one fire reported by a local fire department that reportedly resulted in a death. The commission warns that the refrigerators' internal electrical components may short circuit and start a fire.
"The recalled refrigerators' internal electrical components can short circuit and ignite, posing a risk of serious injury or death from fire and burn hazards," the CPSC said.
Which Units Are Affected
The recalled refrigerators carry date codes from December 2018 through December 2020. They were sold in black, blue, red and white and measure about 58 inches tall, 24 inches deep and 21 inches wide. Each unit has either a left-hand or right-hand door with a handle, three adjustable glass shelves and one drawer; the top freezer has a separate door and one drawer. The front of the appliance is marked with the "Galanz" name.
Where And When They Were Sold
The refrigerators were sold at Home Depot stores nationwide and online at Amazon between January 2019 and September 2022. Individual units were priced between approximately $330 and $520.
