A 9-year-old boy staying in Bimini was flown to the United States for advanced medical treatment after multiple dogs attacked him on a local beach on the morning of Tuesday, July 28.
Incident Details
According to the Royal Bahamas Police Force, the child went to a nearby beach to collect sand at roughly 10 a.m. While on the shore, several dogs attacked him, inflicting wounds to his right thigh and arm, his left leg, and his face and head.
An unidentified man intervened and chased the animals away before leaving the area. The boy returned to the apartment where he was staying and informed his mother. At approximately 10:26 a.m., a woman contacted the Alice Town Police Station to report the attack and asked officers to respond to a beach near a local business.
Officers arrived, found the boy with his mother and transported him to the Bimini Community Clinic, where a physician treated multiple dog-bite wounds. Medical staff described his condition as serious, noting some injuries were potentially life-threatening.
Evacuation And Ongoing Care
Because of the severity of his injuries, the U.S. Coast Guard carried out an emergency medical evacuation later that day. The child was flown to Air Station Miami with his father accompanying him. Upon arrival, Miami emergency medical personnel assumed care and transported the boy to a local hospital for further treatment. Footage released by the Coast Guard shows the child being moved on a stretcher during the operation.
"This case reflects the outstanding work of the command center watch team and Air Station Miami crew, whose response and teamwork helped ensure the person was transported to a higher level of care as quickly and safely as possible," Southeast District Command Center watchstander OS2 Christian Delgado said in a statement.
The Royal Bahamas Police Force later identified the owner of the dogs involved. Authorities say the owner is cooperating with police while officers work to locate, secure and remove the animals.
