A 37-year-old Australian woman was seriously injured in a shark attack on Monday, Sept. 14, while taking part in a dolphin excursion approximately three nautical miles off the coast of North Bimini in the Bahamas, authorities said.
According to a statement from the Royal Bahamas Police Force’s Public Affairs & Communications Department (PACD), the victim sustained significant injuries to her right ankle. She was taken to the Bimini Community Clinic shortly after 5:30 p.m. for initial care and was later airlifted to New Providence for further medical treatment.

The PACD confirmed the incident and said its investigation is ongoing. News outlet People reported that it has reached out to the PACD for additional comment.
Shark Species And Local Context
The Bahamas are home to roughly 40 species of sharks, including large predators such as great hammerheads, oceanic whitetips and bull sharks, according to American Surf Magazine. The most commonly encountered species in Bahamian waters are Caribbean reef sharks, which can reach about nine feet in length and weigh around 155 pounds.
Authorities advise caution for swimmers and tour operators while investigations continue. Officials have not released further details about the circumstances of the attack.
