The Ukrainian Air Force said an F-16 crashed while intercepting hostile aerial objects and the pilot ejected safely. Officials reported no casualties or damage on the ground. Ukraine received its first F-16s in 2024 to help counter Russian drones and missile strikes, but several jets have been lost and not all of the roughly 80 promised aircraft have been delivered.

The Ukrainian Air Force confirmed on Wednesday that one of its Western-supplied F-16 fighter jets crashed while defending the country’s airspace. According to the service, the aircraft went down while intercepting hostile aerial objects and the pilot was forced to eject.

Incident Details

Preliminary information from the Air Force indicates an in-flight emergency prompted the ejection; the pilot was reported unharmed. Authorities said there were no casualties or damage on the ground.

Context

Ukraine began receiving F-16s in 2024 after prolonged negotiations with Western partners. The multi-role jets have been deployed primarily to help defend against Russian drone and missile attacks.

Several F-16s have been lost previously, including one that crashed shortly after initial deliveries. Each loss is significant for Kyiv because Ukraine does not manufacture the aircraft and only a portion of the roughly 80 promised jets have been delivered so far.

"According to preliminary information, there was an emergency situation on board and the pilot had to eject," the Ukrainian Air Force said.

An official investigation is expected to determine the precise cause of the crash and clarify whether it resulted from combat action, a technical failure, or other factors.
