Archaeologists in Pompeii have unveiled a partly reconstructed frescoed ceiling vault from a banquet hall, centered on the mythic couple Dionysus and Ariadne. Conservators used an innovative curved support to position existing fragments and allow new pieces to be added over time. The ceiling likely decorated an upper‑floor banquet room above a bakery, and the reconstruction was presented at an international workshop on Pompeii restorations. The project highlights both advances in conservation technique and the enduring cultural significance of Pompeian art.
Pompeii Unveils Reconstructed Frescoed Vault From Banquet Hall Depicting Dionysus and Ariadne

Archaeologists in Pompeii have revealed a partly reconstructed frescoed ceiling vault from a banquet hall, featuring detailed scenes from Greek mythology centered on Dionysus and Ariadne. The vault was presented at the close of an international workshop showcasing recent discoveries and restoration work at the UNESCO World Heritage site.
Reconstruction Method
Conservators built an innovative curved support that replicates the vault’s original curvature and provides a stable framework to position existing fresco fragments. The modular mount allows newly discovered and restored pieces to be added progressively, enabling researchers to expand and refine the reconstructed composition as excavations continue.
Archaeologists say the ceiling likely came from a banquet room on the upper floor of a house that included an adjoining bakery, offering a rare glimpse into domestic decoration and ritual spaces in first‑century Roman Pompeii.
Significance
The central scene depicts the mythic couple Dionysus and Ariadne, a popular subject that highlights the influence of Greek mythology in Roman domestic art and suggests themes of celebration and renewal appropriate for a banquet setting. Beyond its iconographic value, the reconstruction demonstrates advances in conservation techniques that balance faithful presentation with the ability to update the display as more fragments are found.
Officials emphasized that the work is ongoing: as additional fresco fragments are recovered and conserved, they will be integrated into the vault, gradually restoring more of the original pictorial program and enriching public understanding of Pompeii’s artistic heritage.
