Howard University responded after hundreds of incoming freshmen and families received emails saying missed July 10 deadlines meant the university could no longer hold their spots. The university said it had sent multiple communications between March and July explaining payment options, deadlines and how to report outside scholarships. Howard confirmed the notices targeted students who missed payment, payment-arrangement or financial-aid reporting deadlines and said it is reviewing cases with pending outside aid. Students reporting conflicting guidance were urged to contact Enrollment Management, Financial Aid or the Bursar for case-by-case review. The Fall 2026 term begins August 17.
Howard University Responds After 'Unenrollment' Emails Leave Incoming Freshmen Scrambling

Howard University has issued a public response after hundreds of incoming freshmen and their families reported receiving emails stating the university could no longer hold their spots because tuition payments or payment arrangements were not completed by a July 10, 2026 deadline.
The notices circulated on social media beginning July 22 and included the following message:
"We are writing to follow up on your interest in attending Howard University. The July 10, 2026, deadline to make your tuition payment or payment arrangement to secure your enrollment has passed. As a result of this missed deadline, we can no longer hold your place at Howard University's incoming class. The payment deadline was communicated in previous notices and reflected in your student financial account."
University Response
In a statement provided to theGrio, Howard's communications office acknowledged that the notice was upsetting and said the university sent multiple, detailed communications to first-time-in-college students from March through July. Those outreach efforts included emails, individualized financial-aid information, instructional videos and "Bison Prep" sessions explaining tuition requirements, payment-plan options, how to report outside scholarships, and key deadlines.
Howard clarified that the unenrollment notices were sent only to students who "did not meet the established payment, payment arrangement, or scholarship and other financial aid reporting deadlines." The university said finalizing enrollment for the Fall 2026 semester, which begins August 17, is necessary to plan academic programs, housing, financial aid and student support services.
At the same time, Howard acknowledged that some students may have pending outside scholarships or other aid that were not yet reflected in their accounts. The university said it is reviewing anticipated scholarship funding and other financial aid on a case-by-case basis and will consider relevant circumstances where appropriate.
Student Accounts and Confusion
Several incoming students reported conflicting guidance from staff and inconsistencies between what they saw on their portals and what bursar office representatives told them. Kendra K., an incoming freshman from Atlanta, said she was told by a bursar representative that she was "all set" and did not need to set up a payment plan—even though her student portal showed a balance.
"One day, you would see a payment date in August, and then out of nowhere, my roommate had texted me and said, 'Oh, there's a payment due July 10th.' And this was in June," Kendra recalled. "I checked my account as instructed, but I believe I was misled." She also reflected on the family significance of attending Howard, noting her mother had been unable to continue her education at the university for financial reasons in 1984.
Next Steps and Contacts
Howard urged students with questions or concerns about their enrollment status to reach out directly:
- Office of Enrollment Management: [email protected]
- Office of Financial Aid (general scholarships/aid): [email protected]
- Office of the Bursar (pending scholarships/student balances): [email protected]
The university encouraged affected students and families to contact those offices so individual situations — including pending outside scholarships — can be reviewed. Howard emphasized the need to confirm enrollment ahead of the August 17 start of the Fall 2026 term to allow the university to finalize housing, academic program rosters and student supports.
