Security Camera Wakes Florida Family to 8-Foot Alligator Banging on Front Door

On July 22, a family in Palm Bay, Florida, was jolted awake by a security camera notification and soon discovered an unexpected — and intimidating — visitor: an approximately 8-foot alligator waiting at their front door near Malabar Road.

Palm Bay resident Sierra Wynn posted video footage captured by the camera showing the large reptile striking the door with its tail and emitting deep hisses and growls during the early morning encounter.

"I thought at one point he was gonna come through the window," Wynn told WESH-TV. "His tail was bouncing against the door and against the house. It was such a deep, guttural hiss and growl. He just looked so mean."

Palm Bay police arrived on scene and a trapper from the Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission (FWC) responded to remove the animal. Officials say the trapper was able to capture and remove the alligator without injury to the family or first responders.

Wynn said the security camera alert likely prevented a more dangerous situation. "If we didn't have the cameras and the features where we get notifications that there's an animal in the yard, who knows what would have happened," she said, noting that without the alert someone might have opened the garage or front door without realizing the alligator was there.

Officials routinely remind residents in Florida to be cautious around waterways and yards, secure pets, and report large or aggressive wildlife to local authorities or FWC rather than attempting to handle the animal themselves.
