Russian forces have pushed into Kostyantynivka, part of Ukraine’s eastern "fortress belt", creating a contested "grey zone" and raising fears of encirclement. Kyiv denies full encirclement but acknowledges roughly 130 Russian fighters are operating inside while about 2,000 civilians remain cut off. Analysts warn the advance could threaten Kramatorsk and Slovyansk and advance Moscow’s ambitions in Donetsk, even though the Institute for the Study of War estimates a full conquest of the oblast could take years.

Russian troops have pushed into Kostyantynivka, a city that forms part of Ukraine’s eastern "fortress belt" and serves as a strategic gateway into the wider Donbas region. Both sides describe control as contested: Kyiv calls the city a "grey zone", while Moscow says its forces are intensifying operations and surrounding Ukrainian positions in parts of the city.

Frontline Developments

Ukrainian sources say Russian units have been observed advancing from the south and appearing in northern outskirts, using flanking moves similar to those credited with the capture of Pokrovsk in 2025. The reported aim is to isolate defenders by cutting supply routes and encircling the city.

"They get into areas behind our backs, and in urban conditions it’s extremely difficult to push them out," a Ukrainian drone pilot operating in Kostyantynivka told the BBC, calling the situation a "major crisis."

Official Statements And Situation On The Ground

Kyiv rejects claims that Kostyantynivka is fully encircled. Brigadier General Oleksandr Bakulin, commander of Ukraine’s 19th Corps, said: "The situation remains under control" and asserted that "the enemy has no success," while acknowledging that roughly 130 Russian personnel were operating inside the city.

Authorities estimate about 2,000 civilians remain in Kostyantynivka, which has been cut off from emergency and humanitarian services, heightening concerns about civilian safety and access to aid.

Strategic Context

The fortress belt is a roughly 30-mile defensive line across northern Donetsk Oblast that forms the backbone of Ukraine’s eastern defences. It includes four cities Moscow has so far failed to take: Slovyansk, Kramatorsk, Druzhkivka and Kostyantynivka. Analysts warn that the fall of Kostyantynivka could expose routes toward Kramatorsk and Slovyansk — Ukraine’s remaining major strongholds in eastern Donetsk.

The Institute for the Study of War (ISW) estimates that, at Russia’s current pace of operations, taking the remainder of Donetsk Oblast could take at least two years. Nevertheless, reports from Ukrainian intelligence said Russian commanders have argued they could seize Kramatorsk and Slovyansk by the end of the year, a projection Kyiv disputes.

Political And Expert Reaction

Moscow has pressed territorial demands during negotiations, but President Volodymyr Zelensky has firmly rejected proposals to cede the fortress belt, citing constitutional limits, strategic realities and public will.

Dr Shane O’Rourke, a Russian history specialist at the University of York, described Kostyantynivka as "in balance," warning that any capture of Donetsk would give President Putin a hollow claim to victory but would not necessarily end Ukrainian resistance or negate other fortress cities.

Wider Military Picture

The infiltration occurs amid a broader period of relative stagnation along much of the front. After a recent Ukrainian drone strike on Moscow’s largest oil refinery, Russian authorities reportedly redeployed an air-defence system from frontline positions to protect the capital. Ukrainian commanders say their forces have recaptured more territory this year than they have lost, though fighting remains intense and fluid.

What To Watch: whether Russian forces can sustain pressure and sever supply lines to Kostyantynivka, how Kyiv responds to urban infiltration, and whether the situation forces renewed diplomatic or operational shifts on either side.
