Flaviane Pimenta Carvalho, a server at Mrs. Potato Restaurant in Orlando, Florida, noticed something was wrong when an 11-year-old boy sat quietly with his family in January 2021. The boy wore a hoodie and mask, did not eat, and had a visible scratch on his elbow. Trusting her instincts as a parent and a caretaker, Carvalho took discreet action that ultimately led to the child’s rescue.
What Happened
Carvalho first asked whether the boy’s meal was satisfactory; the family replied that he would eat at home. Alarmed that the child was being denied food and appeared distressed, Carvalho slipped him a note when the parents were not looking. He shook his head "no" to her first question. She then gave him a second, four-word note that read: "Do you need help?" The boy nodded "yes." Carvalho alerted her manager and called 911.
Investigation and Injuries
Police questioned the boy and he reported severe abuse. Investigators, including Erin Lawler, said the child was taken to a hospital and found to be about 20 pounds underweight for his age. The boy told detectives he had been strapped by the ankles and neck, hung upside down from a door, struck with a wooden broom, and handcuffed and tied to a large moving dolly. Authorities described his injuries and treatment as consistent with prolonged and serious abuse.
"What this child had gone through was torture. I’m a mother and seeing what that 11-year-old had to go through… It shocks your soul," Investigator Erin Lawler said.
Legal Outcome
Legal proceedings followed. The boy’s stepfather, Timothy Lee Wilson, was convicted in June 2022 on multiple charges, including false imprisonment, aggravated child abuse with a weapon, aggravated child abuse, and child neglect. He was later sentenced to life in prison. The boy’s mother, Kristen Swann, was found guilty of aggravated child abuse and failing to report child abuse by a household member; under a plea agreement she received a 364-day jail sentence with 15 days credited for time served, 14 years of probation, and a prohibition on contact with her son and other minors.
Award and Takeaway
Orlando Police Chief Orlando Rolon said Carvalho’s intervention likely prevented a far worse outcome. "Because of her, two children… were saved," he said. Carvalho later received an "Everyday Hero" award from the International Center for Missing and Exploited Children. She has said she simply did what any person should do when they suspect a child is in danger: pay attention and reach out.
