A Rockdale County Fire Rescue truck overturned Friday evening at the intersection of Eastview Road and Sigman Road in Conyers, Georgia, while responding to a reported structure fire. Investigators say the driver lost control while negotiating a left turn, causing the emergency apparatus to flip onto its side.
Footage from First Alert Chopper shows the fire truck lying on its side at the scene and an ambulance arriving to provide emergency aid. Authorities report that a firefighter who had been riding on the rear of the truck was ejected during the crash and later died. The Georgia State Patrol has taken the lead on the investigation.

"Marty, the girls, and I are saddened tonight by the loss of Firefighter Juan Antonia Smith," Gov. Brian Kemp wrote on X, asking Georgians to keep Smith's family in their thoughts. Rockdale County Fire Chief James Robinson also issued a statement: "Today, we grieve the loss of one of our own. Our hearts are with the firefighter's family and with every member of our Fire Rescue family who is hurting from this tragedy."
Officials from neighboring Clayton and Henry counties posted condolences on social media and offered support to the Rockdale County Fire Rescue family and the deceased firefighter's loved ones. Rockdale County leaders said they are coordinating resources to support the department and the victim's family during this difficult time.
The Georgia State Patrol's investigation will seek to determine the sequence of events that led to the rollover, including vehicle speed, road and weather conditions, and whether emergency response procedures were followed. Authorities have not released additional details pending the ongoing probe and notification of next of kin.
