Euromillions Winner and Good Samaritan Dies After Suspected Hit-and-Run in Essex

Anthony Canty, 39, a father of two and a recent Euromillions winner who had helped a police officer days earlier, has died after a suspected hit-and-run collision in Tiptree, Essex.

Canty was struck while riding his bicycle on Maldon Road at about 06:30 BST on 21 May and died in hospital four days later. He had been taken to hospital in a serious condition following the collision.

Arrest and Investigation

Essex Police said an 18-year-old man driving a Ford KA was located and arrested in connection with the incident but was later released under investigation. Officers initially arrested the suspect on suspicion of causing serious injury by dangerous driving, driving while unfit through drink or drugs, and failing to stop.

"He remains under investigation and our enquiries continue," a police spokesman said, appealing for any witnesses to come forward.

Canty, from Maldon, had attracted attention in May 2020 after performing CPR on a police officer who collapsed on a bus. Days later, on 5 May 2020, he and his partner Katie Sullivan shared a £1m Euromillions prize. The couple were photographed celebrating with champagne while holding a giant cheque, and Canty said at the time he did not intend to give up his day job.

Essex Police have asked anyone with CCTV or dash-cam footage of the collision, or anyone with relevant information, to contact them as enquiries continue.
