Nick Reiner Appears Stone-Faced in Court as Preliminary Hearing Is Set for Sept. 15 in Parents' Fatal Stabbings

Nick Reiner, 32, appeared stone-faced in a Los Angeles courtroom on Wednesday, April 29, as prosecutors continue to pursue charges related to the December 2025 deaths of his parents, filmmaker Rob Reiner and Michele Singer Reiner.
Reiner is charged with two counts of first-degree murder with special circumstances, including allegations that a knife was used. During the brief appearance he sat expressionless, sporting a goatee and a shaved head, and wore a yellow jail smock with plastic restraints.
Reiner agreed to a general time waiver — relinquishing his right to speed up the proceedings — and a preliminary hearing was scheduled for Sept. 15. When the judge asked whether he accepted that date, Reiner, who spoke very little during the proceeding, answered "yes."

In February, Reiner pleaded not guilty to the charges. The Los Angeles County District Attorney's Office alleges that authorities found Rob, 78, and Michele, 70, fatally stabbed inside their Brentwood home in the early hours of Dec. 14, 2025; the couple was discovered later that afternoon.
Police arrested Reiner "without incident" about six hours after the alleged killings near the University of Southern California campus. He has remained in custody without bail since his arrest.
On April 24, Reiner's older brother, Jake, published a personal essay on Substack describing the moment he learned of his parents' deaths and the family's grief. Jake, 34, wrote about being at Union Station in downtown Los Angeles at a memorial for a friend when he received the call from his sister.
"The 45-minute Lyft ride from downtown to the west side was unendurable," Jake wrote. "My world, as I knew it, had collapsed. I was in a trance."
He added, "Nothing can prepare you for what it feels like to lose both parents instantly at the same time. It's too devastating to comprehend. I still wake up every morning having to convince myself that, no, it's not a dream. This truly is my living nightmare."
The case remains under investigation and is scheduled to proceed toward the preliminary hearing this fall.
