Buried Secrets: HBO’s 'Murder in Glitterball City' Recounts the Basement Killing of Jamie Carroll

Murder in Glitterball City, a two-part HBO documentary, reconstructs the 2009 killing of Jamie Carroll and the tangled investigation that followed after his body was discovered buried in a Kentucky basement. Through police recordings, interrogation footage and court filings, the film chronicles how two men who once lived together alternately admitted to hiding Carroll’s body and accused one another of the killing.

How the Case Came to Light

In June 2010, Jeffrey Mundt called 911 reporting that his former partner, Joseph Banis, was trying to break down his bedroom door with a hammer. In the dispatch audio, Mundt’s panic is audible as police respond. Officers arrested Banis at the scene; while being transported to the station he made a startling admission to arresting officers: there was a dead body buried in the couple’s basement. That claim launched the investigation that is central to the documentary.

Conflicting Accounts

Both men told investigators that they had invited Carroll to the house on the night he died for what they described as a drug-fueled encounter, and that they buried his body in a makeshift grave in the basement. Neither initially admitted to committing the homicide.

Banis drew a map of the home to help police locate the remains. Mundt initially denied knowledge but later said he had helped bury Carroll because he feared for his life. Their stories diverged sharply about who delivered the fatal wounds: Mundt told police Banis slit Carroll’s throat and then shot him, while Banis claimed Mundt, driven by jealousy, stabbed Carroll and then shot him.

Forensics and Charges

Police exhumed Carroll’s remains after they had been in the basement for more than six months. An autopsy found six stab wounds and a single gunshot to the head; the death was ruled a homicide. Both Mundt and Banis were arrested and charged with first-degree murder, robbery and tampering with evidence. They were tried separately.

Trials and Outcomes

Banis’s trial began in February 2013. Mundt testified against him, saying he had been afraid of Banis and had stayed silent. A jury convicted Banis of complicity to murder, robbery and tampering with evidence; he was sentenced to life in prison.

Mundt’s trial took place in May 2013. His defense benefited from experienced counsel and a videotaped motel confession in which Banis appears to admit to killing Carroll while claiming he was holding Mundt hostage. That tape contributed to Mundt’s acquittal on the murder charge. Mundt was nonetheless convicted of robbery and tampering with evidence; court records show combined sentences of three years for robbery and five years for tampering, though he was released after serving about one year behind bars.

Current Status

Banis remains incarcerated and continues to seek a new trial; he is expected to be eligible for parole in 2030. The documentary premiered on HBO on Feb. 19 and presents the evidence, interviews and archival material that allow viewers to follow the case’s complicated twists and unanswered questions.
