Lam arrived in Los Angeles on Jan. 26, 2013, after travelling around California, and checked into the Cecil Hotel on Jan. 28. On Jan. 31 she was seen at a nearby bookstore and later inside the hotel. Surveillance footage from that night — the clip that drew global attention — shows her alone in an elevator acting unusually: pressing multiple buttons, peering out of the open doors, ducking into a corner and at times appearing to talk or gesture toward unseen figures before exiting the elevator.

Search, Discovery And Forensic Findings

When Lam failed to check out on Feb. 1 and could not be reached by family, she was reported missing. Police searched her room and the hotel. Two weeks into the search, hotel guests complained of discolored water and low pressure. On Feb. 19 a maintenance worker, Santiago Lopez, inspected the rooftop tanks and found Lam’s nude body inside one tank; her clothing was at the bottom.

An autopsy found no signs of physical trauma, no evidence of sexual assault and no illicit drugs in her system. Toxicology showed that medication levels for her bipolar disorder were lower than expected, and investigators noted a quantity of prescribed pills among her belongings.

Investigators' Conclusions

Given the lack of injuries and the toxicology results, authorities concluded that foul play was unlikely and that Lam’s death was an accidental drowning, with bipolar disorder listed as a significant contributing factor. Investigators and mental-health experts who reviewed the case have suggested Lam may have experienced a psychotic episode consistent with untreated or intermittently treated bipolar disorder, which could explain disorganized behavior seen in witness accounts and on surveillance.
