55-Year-Old Woman Arrested in Bilbao After Partner Found Fatally Stabbed; Genitals Severed

A 55-year-old woman has been detained in Bilbao after police discovered her 67-year-old partner dead in their Uribarri neighborhood home on Jan. 30. Local authorities say the man suffered multiple stab wounds and that his genitals had been severed; the woman was taken into custody on suspicion of murder after reportedly admitting to the attack.
What Happened
According to a translated statement from the Ertzaintza, the Basque autonomous police, officers were called to the residence following a report of a suspected homicide. When they entered the apartment they found a man who had "suffered a violent death." The victim, a 67-year-old bar owner, had multiple stab wounds, including wounds to the neck, and his genitals had been severed, local reporting said.
Arrest And Investigation
The Ertzaintza said the victim’s partner was present at the scene and allegedly confessed to the attack; she was detained on suspicion of murder while an investigation remains open to determine the full circumstances. Authorities have not yet released a confirmed motive or additional details about the investigation.
How Authorities Were Notified
Local outlet El Diario Vasco reported that the arrested woman’s adult daughter called police after her mother told her she had carried out the killing. Neighbors said they had heard shouting from the couple’s apartment before the discovery.
"No one knows what happens inside people’s homes. They seemed like a normal couple, not toxic at all," a friend of the pair told reporters, adding that the couple often socialized with neighbors and appeared outwardly close.
Local reporting has suggested jealousy may have played a role, but police have not confirmed a motive. The couple had been together for about five years. The Ertzaintza has not provided additional comment beyond the initial statement, and the investigation is ongoing.
