The family of 19-year-old Piper James has spoken publicly after her body was discovered on the Queensland island of K'gari (Fraser Island) on Jan. 19, found encircled by a group of dingoes.
Discovery and Scene
Authorities located Piper on the beach north of the Maheno Wreck on the morning she went missing. She had gone for a swim around 5 a.m., and her body was found roughly an hour later, Wide Bay District Inspector Paul Algie said. Responding officers reported about 10 dingoes around the remains.

Injuries and Investigation
Police said the remains bore injuries "consistent with having been touched and interfered with by the dingoes," and described some wounds as "defensive wounds." However, investigators have not been able to determine whether the primary cause of death was drowning or injury from an animal attack. A forensic post-mortem examination has been scheduled, and the Queensland State Coroner's Office is involved in the ongoing inquiry.
Family Tribute
Piper's parents, who live in Canada, paid tribute while awaiting forensic results. "She loved life, she was courageous and strong, and I know she fought to the end," her mother, Angela James, told the Australian Broadcasting Corporation. Her father, Todd James, remembered her "infectious laugh and kind spirit" and noted Piper had worked as a firefighter in British Columbia so she could pursue outdoor adventures.

Background
Piper—an avid rock climber and dirt-bike rider—had been traveling Australia's east coast and returned to K'gari to work for six weeks with an adventure group. Her family said she lost her phone during that stay and may have walked along the beach to try to get better reception using a friend's device the morning she disappeared.
"We simply can't confirm whether this young lady drowned or died as a result of being attacked by dingoes," Inspector Algie said at a press conference, underscoring that forensic results will be central to establishing the sequence of events.
