Sixty guests were evacuated from Disneyland's monorail on Jan. 8 after a mechanical problem caused a power outage that stalled two trains near Space Mountain. First responders arrived around 5 p.m., used ladders near the park entrance, and completed the evacuation in about two hours. The Anaheim Police Department confirmed the issue was mechanical and that no injuries were reported. The incident follows similar theme-park power failures in recent years.

Sixty guests were evacuated from Disneyland's monorail on Jan. 8 after a mechanical issue caused a power outage that stalled two trains near the Space Mountain attraction in the late afternoon. First responders reached the scene and carried out an orderly evacuation; authorities say no one was injured.

What Happened

According to local reports, the disruption began at about 3:30 p.m. and affected two monorail trains. First responders arrived close to 5 p.m. and positioned two ladders near the park entrance where the trains had lost power. From that point, the evacuation took roughly two hours to complete.

A spokesperson for the Anaheim Police Department told PEOPLE the outage stemmed from a mechanical issue and confirmed there were no injuries. Park representatives did not immediately respond to requests for comment.

Context And Past Incidents

Power outages and mechanical problems have occasionally stranded riders on theme-park attractions. In April 2022, eleven people were left on the Transformers ride at Universal Studios Hollywood during an electrical issue that also affected a Harry Potter-themed attraction. In January 2023, a 400-foot Ferris wheel at Orlando's ICON Park halted after a power failure, leaving dozens stranded for hours while more than 80 firefighters carried out a multi-hour rescue operation.

About The Disneyland Monorail

Disneyland's monorail is a historic, zero-emission transit line that opened in 1959—four years after the park debuted—and was the first daily monorail system of its kind in the United States. The elevated line runs 2.5 miles on a roughly 13-minute round-trip and typically operates every 10 minutes between 8 a.m. and 11 p.m.

The route passes by Fantasyland and Tomorrowland inside Disneyland Park, runs adjacent to Buena Vista Street and Hollywood Land in Disney California Adventure, and connects to the Downtown Disney District and Disney’s Grand Californian Hotel & Spa. There are two boarding stations: one in Tomorrowland inside Disneyland Park and one in the Downtown Disney District near the Disneyland Hotel. (Walt Disney World later opened its own monorail system in 1971.)

Key fact: Authorities confirmed the outage was mechanical and that all passengers were safely evacuated with no injuries.
