Russian missiles struck a residential area in Kharkiv on Friday, wounding 19 people, including a six-month-old infant. AFP images show damaged apartment blocks, smouldering rubble and firefighters at the scene. President Zelensky called the attack “heinous,” saying preliminary reports indicate two missiles hit an ordinary residential area. The strike followed a separate, disputed deadly attack in the occupied south.

A Russian strike on Friday hit residential buildings in the eastern Ukrainian city of Kharkiv, injuring 19 people, Ukrainian officials said. Reported injuries include blast trauma, cuts from shattered glass and abrasions; a six-month-old baby was among the wounded.

Kharkiv regional governor Oleg Synegubov wrote on Telegram that “a total of 19 people suffered blast injuries, glass wounds, and abrasions.” Photographs distributed by AFP from the scene showed damaged multi-storey apartment blocks, smouldering rubble and firefighters working to extinguish fires.

President Volodymyr Zelensky condemned the attack as “heinous,” saying preliminary reports indicate two missiles struck an ordinary residential area. He added that the strike reflects how “the Russians treat life and people” and warned that attacks continue despite diplomatic efforts by international partners.

The incident came a day after Moscow accused Kyiv of bombing a hotel and a cafe in Ukraine’s occupied south — an attack Moscow said killed 27 people. Ukraine disputed that account, saying the strike hit a military gathering closed to civilians. The latest strike in Kharkiv has increased concern over the safety of civilians in contested areas.

Officials' accounts:
Synegubov: 19 injured, including a six-month-old. Zelensky: Preliminary reports point to two missiles striking a residential area.
