Fox News hosts and contributors on Special Report criticized President Trump for blaming “Trump Derangement Syndrome” for the deaths of Rob and Michele Reiner, calling the remark inappropriate for the office. The Reiners were found stabbed in their Brentwood home; their son, Nick Reiner, has been arrested. Panelists including Howard Kurtz, Bret Baier and guests said the president should have refrained from politicizing the tragedy, and noted bipartisan pushback after Trump reiterated his comments.
Fox News Panel: Trump’s 'TDS' Comment On Rob Reiner Murders Was ‘Beneath The Office’
On Monday’s edition of Special Report, Fox News hosts and contributors expressed unanimous disapproval of President Donald Trump’s public reaction to the killings of film director Rob Reiner and his wife, Michele Singer Reiner.
Panel Condemns Politicizing a Family Tragedy
The Reiners were found stabbed to death at their Brentwood home on Sunday; their son, Nick Reiner, has been arrested in connection with the killings. In a social media post, President Trump suggested the director suffered from what he called “Trump Derangement Syndrome” (TDS) and implied Reiner’s political views were connected to the deaths. The post read in part:
“A very sad thing happened last night in Hollywood. Rob Reiner, a tortured and struggling, but once very talented movie director and comedy star, has passed away, together with his wife, Michele... reportedly due to the anger he caused others through his massive, unyielding, and incurable affliction with a mind crippling disease known as TRUMP DERANGEMENT SYNDROME... May Rob and Michele rest in peace!”
Host Howard Kurtz opened the discussion by criticizing the president’s characterization and defending Reiner’s character. “Rob Reiner was a mensch,” Kurtz said, adding that while Reiner was a vocal liberal and critic of Trump, it was inappropriate for the president to link a family’s tragedy to political obsession.
“For the president of the United States to take this family tragedy in which both Reiner and his wife were killed and say that it’s because of ‘Trump Derangement Syndrome,’ I thought was well beneath him and beneath the office,” Kurtz said. “I think it would have been better if the president had made no comment.”
Panel Comments and Bipartisan Pushback
Host Bret Baier played a clip of Rob Reiner condemning political violence in a past segment, underscoring Reiner’s public stance against lethal attacks on political figures. Baier noted that Trump’s remarks drew criticism from members of his own party.
Conservative contributor Guy Benson called the president’s timing and tone inappropriate. “There’s a time and place for politics and for trolling. A man being viciously murdered along with his wife is not that time or that place,” Benson said. “For the president to have put this out the way that he did achieves nothing and reflects poorly.”
Stef Kight of Axios added that Trump had doubled down on the comments when asked in the Oval Office and that it was unfortunate to insert politics into such a tragic situation, particularly amid heightened concern about political violence this year.
The segment emphasized bipartisan displeasure with the president’s framing and urged restraint when addressing violent, sensitive events. Watch the full segment via Fox News.
