Human Remains Found Near Trainwreck Rapids Believed To Be Kayaker Missing Since 2023

Human remains were found Dec. 5 near Trainwreck Rapids in Brunswick Canyon, Nevada, and are believed to be those of 52-year-old kayaker Robert Lawson White, who disappeared in June 2023. Detectives and Carson City Search and Rescue recovered the remains, clothing and other items the day after discovery. White had been kayaking with James Martin, whose body was recovered in July 2023 about 1.7 miles east of the Brunswick Canyon Bridge. Next of kin have been notified and formal identification will be completed by the Washoe County Medical Examiner’s Office.

Discovery And Recovery

Officials with the Carson City Sheriff's Office located the remains at a remote stretch of the rapid. Deputies secured and preserved the scene, and detectives alongside Carson City Search and Rescue returned the following day to recover the remains as well as clothing and other personal items recovered at the site, local outlets reported.

Background And Investigation

White had been kayaking in Brunswick Canyon with 59-year-old James Martin. Martin’s body was recovered in July 2023 roughly 1.7 miles east of the Brunswick Canyon Bridge; White’s remains had not been found until this December discovery. Authorities say White’s next of kin have been notified, and formal scientific identification is expected to be completed by the Washoe County Medical Examiner’s Office.

Local news organizations that reported the discovery include KOLO, News4, and the Reno Gazette Journal. PEOPLE has contacted the Carson City Sheriff's Office and Carson City Search and Rescue for comment but did not receive an immediate response.

Details Previously Released

Previous descriptions listed Martin as approximately 5 feet 9 inches tall, 200 pounds, with brown hair and brown eyes. White was described as approximately 5 feet 8 inches tall, 220 pounds, with blond hair and green eyes.

Note: Out of respect for the family and pending formal identification, investigators are withholding further details until the Washoe County Medical Examiner completes its examination.
