Rutgers Student Missing Nearly Two Weeks — Car Found in Nearby School Parking Lot

Mortimer “Morty” Wortman, a 22-year-old Rutgers–New Brunswick student, has been missing since about 10:30 p.m. on Nov. 21 after being seen in woods near High Bridge Road in Jackson, N.J. His car was later found in the Regional Day School parking lot.

Family members say an acquaintance last saw Wortman and later reported him missing; Rutgers is cooperating with local police as the search continues. A GoFundMe has raised more than $17,000 to support search efforts.

Mortimer “Morty” Wortman, a 22-year-old student at Rutgers–New Brunswick, has been missing since the night of Nov. 21. Authorities and the Rutgers community continue searching after Wortman was last seen in a wooded area near High Bridge Road in Jackson, New Jersey.

What investigators say

Jackson Police report Wortman was last observed at about 10:30 p.m. on Nov. 21. His vehicle was later discovered parked in the lot of the Regional Day School in Jackson. Police are treating the case as an active missing-person investigation and are asking anyone with information to come forward.

Family and university response

Wortman’s family says he was last with an acquaintance who later reported him missing. His older brother, Ivan Marks, has said the family remains "still in limbo" as they await news. Rutgers University confirmed Wortman is a student on the New Brunswick campus and said officials are working closely with local law enforcement.

Search efforts and fundraising

A GoFundMe established to support search efforts had raised more than $17,000 as of Dec. 3. The fundraiser describes Mortimer as "a kind and unique person who is deeply loved" and asks for community support for ongoing search expenses.
