Des Moines Airport Temporarily Closes During Holiday Travel Weekend After Delta Jet Slides Off Runway

Late on Nov. 29, a Delta jet from Detroit slid off a runway at Des Moines International Airport during a winter storm. All passengers were safely deplaned and bused to the terminal; no injuries were reported. The aircraft remained on the pavement pending NTSB clearance, and officials expected the airport to reopen by mid-morning Nov. 30. The National Weather Service warned of 6–12 inches of snow and gusty winds that may disrupt travel across the region.

Des Moines International Airport (DSM) temporarily closed late Saturday, Nov. 29, after a Delta Air Lines jet slid off a runway while landing amid a winter storm. The aircraft, arriving from Detroit, left the paved surface at about 10:00 p.m. local time.

All passengers were safe. DSM spokesperson Sarah Hoodjer said passengers were deplaned onto buses and transported to the terminal; no injuries were reported.

The aircraft remained on the pavement while investigators from the National Transportation Safety Board (NTSB) prepared to formally release it. Airport officials posted on X that they expected the facility to reopen the following morning, with plans to resume operations by mid-morning on Nov. 30.

The incident occurred as a significant winter storm moved through the Midwest and Great Lakes. The National Weather Service issued a winter weather warning calling for widespread moderate to heavy snow, with expected accumulations of 6–12 inches in many areas and locally more than 1 foot, along with gusty winds that could create hazardous travel conditions.

Travelers were advised to contact their airlines for updates. Airport officials, Delta Air Lines and the NTSB were contacted for comment as investigators examine the circumstances surrounding the landing.
