A 14-year-old girl in Denham Springs, Louisiana, has been charged with first-degree murder after her newborn was discovered dead inside a tote bag at her home. Authorities say hospital staff notified the Livingston Parish Sheriff's Office on Nov. 21 when the teenager sought medical treatment after giving birth at her residence.

When deputies responded to the home, emergency personnel found the infant inside a tote bag with extensive injuries to the neck. Medical staff believe the baby was carried to full term, born alive and killed shortly after birth. An autopsy later determined the manner of death to be homicide.

'Medical personnel believe the infant was carried to full term, born alive and killed immediately after birth. It is believed the teen did conceal her pregnancy from family,' Sheriff Jason Ard said in a statement.

The teenager was initially charged with failure to seek assistance and obstruction of justice. Following the autopsy findings, authorities upgraded the case and charged her with first-degree murder. She is being held at the Florida Parishes Juvenile Detention Center while investigators continue to examine the circumstances surrounding the birth and death.

No identifying information about the girl has been released because of her age. Officials say the investigation remains active and have not released further details.
