A 17-year-old male allegedly shot and killed his 18-year-old ex-girlfriend inside a home in Nesconset, Long Island, on Wednesday, Nov. 26, before turning the weapon on himself, Suffolk County Police said.

The victim, identified as Emily Finn of West Sayville, N.Y., was pronounced dead at the scene at approximately 11:10 a.m. The juvenile suspect — who is not being publicly identified because of his age — reportedly shot himself in the face. His parents called 911, and he was transported to Stony Brook University Hospital in critical but stable condition.

Charges and investigation

Suffolk County Police said the minor will be charged with second-degree murder and will be arraigned at a later date. Detectives from the department’s homicide bureau are leading the investigation and continue to develop the case.

Det. Lt. Kevin Beyrer, commanding officer of the homicide bureau, told local media Finn had gone to the suspect’s home to return his belongings following a breakup. Authorities have not released additional details as they work to compile a full timeline and evidence.

The investigation remains ongoing; police and prosecutors will release further information when appropriate.
