Brooklyn Man Sentenced to Life Without Parole for 2022 Dismemberment of Acquaintance

Nicholas McGee, 48, was sentenced to life without parole after a jury convicted him of the March 2022 murder and dismemberment of 38-year-old Kawsheen Gelzer. Prosecutors say McGee stabbed Gelzer more than 60 times, struck him with a hammer, and later dismembered the body, hiding parts in a refrigerator and freezer.

The remains were recovered on Jan. 20, 2024, following an anonymous tip, and McGee later confessed while in custody. Authorities say the killing grew out of a drug-related dispute; McGee’s wife, Heather Stines, pleaded guilty to concealment and faces sentencing.

Nicholas McGee, 48, was sentenced on Nov. 19 to life in prison without the possibility of parole after a jury convicted him of first-degree murder and concealment of a human corpse for the March 2022 killing and dismemberment of 38-year-old Kawsheen Gelzer.

The attack took place in the Flatbush apartment McGee shared with his wife, Heather Stines. According to prosecutors and medical testimony, Gelzer was sleeping on a sofa when McGee stabbed him more than 60 times and struck him with a hammer. Prosecutors say McGee then went through the victim’s pockets, taking drugs that he and Stines later used.

Authorities say McGee dragged Gelzer’s body to the bathroom, where it remained in the bathtub for several days. He later dismembered the body with a saw and hammer, placed the parts into separate plastic bags, and hid the head, torso, arms and legs inside a refrigerator and a freezer in the apartment; both appliances were reportedly sealed with tape and glue.

Gelzer’s remains were discovered on Jan. 20, 2024, after an anonymous Crime Stoppers tip led police to search the apartment. At the time of the discovery McGee was in custody in Virginia on an unrelated matter; detectives report that he later confessed to the killing and dismemberment during questioning.

“This was a deeply disturbing act of violence,” Brooklyn District Attorney Eric Gonzalez said. “The cruelty and disregard for human life shown in the case are almost beyond comprehension.”

A sentencing memorandum reviewed by investigators says the attack stemmed from a drug-related dispute. The memo alleges Gelzer had previously supplied the couple with drugs in exchange for sexual favors and lodging; tensions escalated on the day of the killing when requests were refused and McGee said he felt disrespected.

Stines pleaded guilty in October 2024 to concealment of a human corpse and third-degree bail jumping. She is scheduled to be sentenced at a later date.
