Pope Leo Calls on Americans to Make Thanksgiving a Day of Gratitude and Peace

Pope Leo, the first U.S.-born pope, told reporters at Castel Gandolfo that Americans should center this year’s Thanksgiving on gratitude to God and on promoting peace. He urged people to "say thank you to someone" and to recognize the many gifts they have received. Born in Chicago, Pope Leo will leave on his first overseas trip on Thanksgiving Day.

At Castel Gandolfo on Tuesday, Pope Leo — the first U.S.-born pope — urged Americans to place gratitude to God at the center of this year’s Thanksgiving as families and friends gather around the table.

Speaking from his residence outside Rome, he encouraged people not only to offer thanks to God but also to promote peace and express appreciation to one another. "I would encourage all people, especially with this beautiful feast we have in the United States which unites all people … to say thank you to someone," he said, adding that everyone has received many gifts worth recognizing.

Born in Chicago, Pope Leo will depart on his first overseas trip on Thanksgiving Day.

"To recognise that we all have received so many gifts."

The pope's remarks highlight a theme of reconciliation and mindfulness for the holiday, urging small acts of gratitude that can strengthen communities and foster peace.
