Search Paused for Missing Law Professor Charles Hosch After Two Weeks on Blood Mountain

The active field search for 67-year-old law professor Charles Hosch, who disappeared while hiking on Blood Mountain on Nov. 11, was paused by authorities on Nov. 24 while they await new leads. Hosch's law firm, Hosch & Morris, says the pause is temporary and that private search efforts will continue. Family members remain hopeful and urge anyone with information to contact the Union County Emergency Operations Center at (706) 439-6091.

Authorities have paused active field operations in the search for 67-year-old law professor Charles Hosch, who went missing while hiking on Veterans Day. Hosch was last seen descending from the summit of Blood Mountain on the Byron Herbert Reece Trail on Nov. 11.

The Union County Sheriff's Office deployed ground teams and later specialized K-9 units to search the rugged terrain. On Nov. 21, officials said ground teams were scaled back so scent-tracking teams could focus on locating potential clues. On Nov. 24, local authorities announced they would temporarily suspend active field operations while awaiting new information or credible leads.

'This pause does not mark the end of the search,' Hosch's law firm, Hosch & Morris, PLLC, said in a statement. 'The case remains active, and search-and-rescue personnel will continue to follow up on any new clues or credible information.'

Hosch & Morris said the firm will continue private search efforts and is planning the next phase of its search operations. The firm also publicly thanked search-and-rescue teams for navigating difficult terrain and challenging conditions in their efforts to find him.

Family, background and community response

Family members expressed cautious hope. His daughter, Julia Hosch-Singh, told local media she remains optimistic, saying her father 'is extraordinary' and that surviving in the wilderness by finding shelter and water is still a possibility. She added that the family has drawn strength from his favorite Bible verses and remains grateful for the search teams' efforts.

Hosch is described by his firm as a Harvard Law School graduate who spent more than three decades mentoring law students at SMU Dedman School of Law. He is a former Eagle Scout who volunteered with the Scouts for years, taught Sunday school at his church, has been married for 42 years, and recently became a grandfather for the first time.

Current status and how to help

Authorities emphasize the case remains open and that search-and-rescue personnel will respond to credible new information. Anyone with information about Hosch's whereabouts is asked to contact the Union County Emergency Operations Center at (706) 439-6091 or call 911.

The family and firm reiterated their gratitude to volunteers and professionals who took part in the search and said they will share updates about the next phase of their private efforts as they develop.
