At least five people, including three children, were killed Monday afternoon in a multi‑vehicle collision on Highway 83 south of Franktown, Colorado, authorities said.

What happened

The crash occurred at approximately 4:39 p.m. on Nov. 24 near South Russellville Road. According to the Colorado State Patrol (CSP), a southbound black Toyota hatchback lost control, left the right shoulder, then re‑entered the roadway and rolled into the northbound lane, ejecting its driver. The Toyota struck a tan Ford sedan head‑on and continued, colliding with a black Ford pickup.

Victims and response

The Ford sedan was carrying one adult man and five children. CSP confirmed the sedan's driver and three of the children were pronounced dead at the scene. Two other juveniles from that vehicle were critically injured and were airlifted to a local hospital. Officials reported a total of at least five fatalities; investigators continue to determine the full circumstances and any additional casualties. The driver of the pickup was reported uninjured.

Investigation and road impacts

Franktown Fire Rescue described the situation as involving complex motor‑vehicle crashes and warned motorists to avoid the area. Highway 83 was closed in both directions for an extended period while emergency crews worked at the scene. The Douglas County coroner will complete formal reports on the victims, and the Colorado State Patrol is leading the investigation. Authorities have not yet released the victims' identities.

Local law enforcement and fire‑rescue units assisted at the scene. Motorists were advised to use alternate routes while the investigation and recovery operations continue.
