Cape Coral, FL — A DoorDash driver was arrested on suspicion of driving under the influence while he still had a customer’s order in his vehicle. Local police say officers found the driver slumped behind the wheel, detained him, and then delivered the meal to ensure the customer received it safely.

What happened

On Nov. 20, Cape Coral police responded to reports of a man appearing unconscious behind the wheel at the intersection of Skyline Boulevard and Cape Coral Parkway. Officers located a 25-year-old driver, later identified as Luis Alania Estrella, slumped in the driver’s seat of a Toyota and took him into custody.

Charges and test results

Police charged Estrella with driving under the influence and driving with a suspended license. According to the department, he recorded a blood-alcohol concentration (BAC) of 0.15%, which is roughly double Florida’s legal limit of 0.08%. Estrella was transported to the Lee County Jail and booked in good health.

Police response and delivery

Officers discovered the customer’s order still in the vehicle. In a department press release, police said:

"In an effort to assist the community member awaiting their meal, one of the responding officers took the initiative to deliver the food order to its final destination. The actions of the officer helped ensure the resident received the meal safely and without unnecessary delay."

Officer Mercedes Simonds added that residents likely did not expect an officer to arrive at their door with a meal, but she hoped they appreciated the effort.

Company action

A DoorDash spokesperson confirmed the driver has been permanently removed from the platform and reiterated the company’s policy:

"DoorDash has zero tolerance for driving under the influence — every single Dasher is required to follow the law, period."

Body-camera footage released by police shows the driver slumped over before officers approached the vehicle. The Cape Coral Police Department handled the investigation and processing at the scene.
